The book grow on me as time went by. Nice story overall, not the best Dostoevsky works for sure, but it is an interesting one. It’s full of psychological analyses, and it’s perfection is in part 4, chapter 9. Part 4, chapter 4 is the funniest chapter I have read by D. I’d recommend the book just for that! The book definitely finishes strong unlike Karamazov Brothers!

The story follows an epileptic and often socially naive young prince named Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin. Dostoevsky attempted to embody Myshkin as a man who exhibited the benevolent traits and goodness of an ideal Russian Orthodox Christian. However his fatal flaw, being labeled as an idiot by others despite his wisdom, inhibited him from communicating effectively. Myshkin is placed in a series of emotionally and morally turbulent circumstances amongst hyperbolic characters who test his forgiveness, empathy, morality, and faith. A deeply philosophical novel, Dostoevsky explores themes of atheism and existentialism, madness, mental illness, capital punishment, differing sects of Christianity, and mortality. Although not quite as good as my favorite novel of his, The Brothers Karamazov, the Idiot stands as an excellent novel in Russian and world literature.
