I'd give it 4 for the story and 5 for the narration of the audiobook.

This was a long yet very entertaining read and I can see how many people are calling it a classic. I appreciated the author's way with words and found it beautifully written, and the way in which all of the character's personalities are described is exceptional.

It's difficult to say what the book is really about-yes, it's a story about a rivalry between two (or three?) magicians, but it's more than that. It's about friendship, love, books, reason vs madness, extraversion vs introversion, envy, and, oh yes, magic.

On top of all of that, the story is set in 19th century England during the Napoleonic Wars, so it feels like you're reading a Charles Dickens novel with magicians.

Every time I reread this book I find my affection for all its characters has only grown. It really is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I hope I’ll never get tired of it in the years to come

SUCH a vibe, but alas too meandering for my mood and I've been picking at this for too long. Maybe I'll pick it back up at another time

This book is simply a must-read! It has: The most original use of footnotes in any novel I have ever read, a very Victorian English setting, a world of magic build around Old English and Irish folktales and two main characters whose relation is tense at the best of times. You won't be able to put this one down once its grown on you!

Susan Clarke is one of the greats. I wish modern fantasy was more like this and less focused on "magic systems" and the like.

one of the most British books I have ever read
