1 topical collection of poems
Sidman, Joyce, and Michelle Berg. Meow Ruff. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2006. Print. 32 p.

In this collection of concrete poetry, a dog and cat are natural enemies. However, the two become inadvertent friends during a thunder storm when they seek shelter under the same bench. The words in this collection form objects such as trees, clouds, the grass, and a house by using appropriate colors and fonts to “build” the objects. The illustrations are cartoon-like, with bright, primary colors. As rain falls, readers experience it by the “drip” and “drop” words falling vertically from the sky. This collection of concrete poetry will be interesting for young children to experience, but older children are better suited to grasp the concept of concrete poetry. Children will create their own concrete poetry, starting with simple words and objects.

This book is simple and complicated all at the same time! Even after multiple readings, I continued to find fun details and poetry to read "hidden" in the illustrations. I especially loved the ants and the ladybugs.
