Wasn’t in the mood.
The trigger warning about conversion camps for queer kids was well founded and I didn’t want to get to a point where there was harm done to the main characters.

A unique, poignant and moving novel and one that becomes all the more terrifying when you ponder over how easily the sate of our own society and political landscape could shift this from a dystopian category to contemporary. I found this to be a fascinating, heart-aching and incredibly cleverly written read and one I'd love to revisit at some point in the future.

A queer, dystopian novel that focuses on the world of conversion therapy and how no matter what "they" do, they cannot force people to change. Set in a world that has "changed": "the straight, way is the right way", when in actuality the world was damaged due to major climate change. The story goes back and forth between the time Eleanor spent at The Meadows, being "retrained", to her current life as an adjudicator, living with the trauma that has been inflicted on her in the past, seeking out her friends and loved ones from The Meadows, running from a world where nothing is what it appears. There were time when the story dragged, maybe due to the in depth world building. It was an intriguing story, one for those who enjoy Handmaid's Tale stories.
