BOOK REVIEW
Any Ordinary Day / Leigh Sales
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
this was an incredibly thought provoking book which was extremely well researched and written.
I have come to realise that I like reading & learning about real life events and how people overcome fear/grief relating to tragedies - I know, I know, that sounds extremely morbid in a way, like I relish tragic events. but the truth is that we never really know when something could happen to us and that’s exactly what this book is about.
there is not a single thing that makes one of us more important or special than anyone else - both a terrifying and enlightening fact! we are not promised anything in life, we're not promised 20 days or 50 years, we’re not promised a spouse or children, we’re not promised a damn thing! it's like playing a game of lotto you didn’t know you had a ticket to, wondering when your number will be called up.
it was incredible to read that people who have experienced so much loss and tragedy still have so much hope, love and faith. one man had lost his wife in the 1997 thredbo landslide, only to lose his second wife to breast cancer some years later. but having a tragic past doesn’t make us more susceptible to a tragic future - if he was to marry for a third time, his third wife would not automatically be set on a tragic path.
Sales also talks about post traumatic growth, and that the defining factor for growth is that the event itself has to be catastrophic, it must shake us to our core and cause us to rethink everything we believe. we all have fundamental beliefs, they differ for each of us and form in our younger years through personal experiences.
ultimately, what I learnt most is that although we never know when something bad could happen to us or someone we love, it goes to show that we are capable of growing within ourselves. every day people lose loved ones around the world, but i hope it’s not our turn today or tomorrow or the rest of this year 🤍

In ‘Any Ordinary Day’, Leigh Sales grapples with life’s hardest question, what happens after the worst day of your life? Sales explores trauma, tragedy and loss with a raw honesty and professionalism, using both academic papers, her own experiences and the experiences of others to discover how people cope with sudden, inexplicable calamity. Filled with life lessons, moments of hope and deep reflection, this book is a must read - offering teachings from how to help those in your life grieving, and how those whose lives have suddenly been turned upside down put the pieces back together again. I know I will be thinking about this book for years to come.
