Another masterfully created work of fiction by Stephen King. I greatly enjoyed this piece; while it is not quite as intense and fast-paced as Mr. Mercedes and thus may appeal less to some readers, the writing, setting, characters and plot are as good as the previous novel.

The novel is a slow burn, the introduction long and drawn out to gradually pull the audience into the universe and story. The audience is brought to the world in typical King fashion, with murder and brilliant writing.

So far, The Bill Hodges Trilogy has some of the best-written villains I have ever come across and certainly the most explored. King delves into the minds of Brady Hartsfield and Morris Bellamy, almost half of this book and the previous is explored through their point of view. This POV provides the audience with an understanding of the villain as well as a sense of foreboding and frustration. This method of storytelling is quite unconventional in crime and mystery but not unpleasant and adds to the series, giving it a sense of foreboding and horror while also shining a light on how evil is explainable. The audience is aware of how unpredictable the characters are but also why they are the way they are, which can add a touch of empathy for the characters even when they commit heinous crimes.

Morris' backstory is perhaps more understandable and relatable than Brady’s. He faces a lot of difficulties due to his family life, upbringing, and youth, and the course of his life is completely altered by one mistake he makes while angry and drunk as a teenager, reminding the audience of how quickly one can become a criminal and fall into a cycle of abuse. Originally, he is not cruel, merely extremely troubled and egotistical, set on only one thing his whole life. However, he turns cruel with time and loses his empathy for others.

Bill Hodges is not overly present in this novel at all, appearing late into the story and doing very little to aid Pete Saubers until the very end. His lack of interaction makes him feel more like a side character, and the novel feels like a one-off rather than the central book in a trilogy. However, Hodges' time in the novel is extremely enjoyable; King portrays his positivity and how he enjoys life since the events of Mr. Mercedes. Holly is also not overly present in this novel yet her character growth is well represented and very uplifting to observe.

Stephen King is not the most diverse author; almost all his main characters are white men or boys. He does, however, represent people from all walks of life as background and important side characters. While he primarily has white, male heterosexual leads, there are still many strong characters of different sexual preferences, genders, and ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. In this series, I am impressed by his representation of physical and mental illness and life with a physical illness, mental illness, or disability.

This novel has no definitive supernatural elements, but the ending leaves foreshadowing and the potential for supernatural growth. Finders Keepers is another awesome Stephen King read, and if you enjoyed Mr. Mercedes, you will certainly enjoy this book.
