I really struggled through this. Somehow I remain loyal to SK even when he bores me. This was too folksy and I found the main character annoying.

When I heard that this novel managed to pay an homage, and reference both Lovecraftian imagery with Shelley -like themes, I could not begin to conceive of how such a marriage of iconic aspects of literature could come together. But in his enigmatic way, King managed just that: a book that holds a good pace and storyline in the beginning, lulls a bit through the middle, then leaves the reader with a truly nightmarish conclusion.

I am pleased to say that no aliens appear in this book!

This is classic King. In the vein of It, there’s a horror story inside of a coming of age story. Or maybe it’s a coming of age story inside of a horror? Whichever, the tale as told by actor David Morse on audio (who is brilliant in his reading), follows the life of Jamie who is for some odd reason drawn to a reverend turned con artist turned revival tent leader turned crazy. My only complaint is that it didn’t really get creepy till the last couple chapters. I wasn’t fully convinced of the tension between Jamie and Jacobs, the lead characters. But read so well by Morse, that I can recommend it. 3

It was good. However, it was NOT even in my top 15 Stephen King favorites. I probably rated it lower than I would if it was written by someone else. I just expect more from King.

It’s surprising how often it happens that I start reading a King book, create some possible scenarios of story development and then get something that is not up there with the initial excitement. Missed opportunities in this one are most prominent.

Listened to the audiobook while traveling.
