Qué buena recomendación de Cassie y de Blackmagicrose!! Una estupenda novela de highlanders en una época extremadamente complicada en Escocia (si habéis leído Outlander os va a sonar todo). Me lo he pasado genial leyéndola. Y Marsha Canham escribe genial, qué gustazo.

Alex, ven a mí!!!!!!

Ugh...typical "really cheap on Amazon" romance novel. Young stupid female lead, the predictable "arranged/forced marriage" to the super-hot, rich, good-at-everything, scottish guy. Of course she hates him on sight, and instead wants to be with the handsome-evil-bad-guy (rolls eyes). I couldn't even finish this. Is there some kind of "romance author template" that everyone uses for these kinds of books? They're almost always the "I hate the hot guy I've been forced to marry" book or the "I love him as soon as I saw him and we are getting married 2 weeks later" book. Throw in some variations on theme: scottish highlander, a pirate, a prince that doesn't know he's a prince, the duke who thinks he'll never love again... whatever. I think I'm getting too old for this crap. I used to like these kind of books when I was younger.

When will I learn my lesson that just because it's free (or nearly free on Amazon), doesn't mean I need to download it.

It's a rich historical fiction set in Scotland in the 18th century. Kinda like Outlander but without time travel. It's well done in terms of world building with lots of historical references regarding the Jacobite rising of 1745. It's an exciting book and the rhythm is good.
There was one thing that caused me uneasiness in this book: the prevalence of a raping theme. I know it's historical and you can argue that that's how things were back then, but it's a fictional romance novel and I expected less of it. For example, even though it's not explicit, the "male hero" (Alexander) clearly uses the implicit idea of rape to frighten the heroine (Catherine). Every men on the road that encounters Catherine (or any women for that matter) thinks about "taking advantage" of her. So maybe the setting was too historical/realistic for me?

This was on a B&N list for "If you like Outlander try this" but besides the 18th century Scottish setting and rebel activity there was really no similarity. I'll take confident, feminist, and bad ass Claire over this vapid annoyance any day. AND despite how annoying I found the main lady, I didn't like how Alexander continuously used sexual acts as a means to punish and control her.

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. The lead female is about as pleasant as fingernails on a chalkboard and the dialogue was often cumbersome and dry. Furthermore the dialogue is annoyingly modern in English and doesn't bother offering definitions for the Gaelic/Gàidhlig terms and phrases until they've appeared several times. Sure, I wanted to keep Google open for every few pages of a novel. :-/

I was beyond irritated with the lack of consistency throughout the book - is his name Alexander or Alasdair? Is her hair long and straight or curly and wavy? Did they spend 3 weeks together? 5 weeks? 4 weeks? It began to feel like a merry-go-round I desperately wanted off of halfway through the book, I'm not sure why I trudged on for such a buy-the-next-book cliffhanger at the end.

The enjoyable components of the book primarily centered around the descriptions of Scotland and when the female protagonist is out of the scene or silenced. I think I would have preferred spending time with a historical non-fiction or a guidebook to Scotland.

Starts out like a formulaic romance but gets interesting a quarter of the way in. Reminds a bit of Outlander.

One of the better historical Scottish-barbarian-meets-English-rose romances. Typical romance tropes: the couple at odds for half the novel, then hiding their feelings, then separated by enemies, then sacrificing for a greater good. Political context gives depth to the romance. Wondering how the author will deal with Culloden...

A heroína é irritante até cerca de 3/4 do livro mas apesar deste problema é um bom romance histórico com muito detalhe e uma história divertida.
