I really liked this one. A true survival thriller. Four friends hiking a mountain in Norway encounter trouble and danger in the form of weather, strangers, and each other. I loved the complicated friendships and drama. I loved the cliffhangers on every other page. The pace was quick and the plot was full of tension and suspense.

Bit of a mystery formula, I didn’t figure everything out, but it was obvious where certain herrings were. Still, a fun read about 4 ordinary women facing an extraordinary experience. 3.75

Not the best, not the worst. The beginning is extremely slow, it takes a good 100 pages just to get through the exposition. Also worth noting: this is more of a thriller set in nature than a survival thriller. And when the story finally shifts from interpersonal drama to thriller mode I genuinely had to laugh out loud, cause the plot hook was so clished.

There are also a lot of cheap mini-cliffhangers, those dramatic end-of-chapter sentences meant to create suspense, that quickly became predictable and repetitive. And lastly, overall, the plot requires a repeated suspension of disbelief.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the writing. The author has a knack for grounding scenes in physical detail that's unexpectedly visceral, sometimes even gross, which gives the story a certain rawness. As such the world feels more authentic and immersive, a style that I don't think is too common in the genre.

Another thing that stood out was the very woman-centric framing. Not just because the main characters are all women, but because the narrative tone and themes clearly cater to a female audience. Sometimes it works; other times it veers into the odd and overly earnest - like when the characters are described as finally being in nature "with their beautiful, real, female bodies." Lines that feel pulled from a brochure for a feminist wilderness retreat.

In the end it's a book that mostly does what it's supposed to, but your mileage might vary.

Fast paced, quick read that i found perfect to pick up between two longer books. This was my first Lucy Clarke book and I did enjoy it, it just didn’t blow me away.

The plot was really well thought out and the characters (although a little annoying) were perfect for the storyline. I just felt a bit meh by the end of it. While the start was intriguing, I felt the middle dragged and became a little repetitive and I think the drug outcome was a bit underwhelming and anticlimactic. I think murder between two friends and then the aftermath/cover up might have been a slightly better ending.

Overall I’m glad I picked it up and I would definitely recommend for a quick read, it just wouldn’t be at the top of my recommendations. It also won’t be my last Lucy Clarke and I’m hoping her other books live up to the hype a bit more for me
