Maybe I’m just not good at predicting things but I wanted to give this book more credit than a lot of the reviews I’ve seen. It had all the aspects I was looking for in a thriller and got me excited to get back into reading.

Ms. Green did keep me reading, because I kept waiting for something "big" to happen, but it never really did. The writing was definitely engaging, but I would have liked the tension of the mystery to be more intense, more intriguing. The ending was nicely tied up, but again it seemed a bit of a letdown. Overall, it was a decent read. I will definitely give her other books a try.

Completely got me out of my reading funk. Powered through this one, and it made me excited to read again. It had a great pace and kept me intrigued
Has taken me down a rabbit hole of wanting a cottage (minus all the creepy bits!)

This had such a feeling of dread and a strong undercurrent of terror - it was really well done!

I thought the overall story was a bit sloppy. Neve wasn’t a very sympathetic character and while she grew up as the story progressed, the beginning set a bit of a rocky caricature. I never truly resonated with her as a character.

The Finn bits could have been left out entirely. The author had a good book, don’t try to do too much and spoilt it!

The ending fell a bit flat for me. The book was suspenseful and gaining momentum... then, it just rather tapered out.

I’m going to try another book by the same author and see what I think. The potential is there, it just needs to be a bit more ironed out.

I’m bummed when I read a book that starts off strong, jumbles up a bit in the middle and then wraps up in the end in a few paragraphs.

Here you have all of that. At least it was an easy read that I was pulled into immediately.

Lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed reading it quite a lot. I had guessed who was behind all the weirdness (which doesn’t bother me), but was still not quite satisfied by the ending. Loved the Brit-speak, however. Quite a few words I’d never heard before. I’d say I liked Green’s debut novel (The Woman Next Door) better, but I liked this enough that I’ll try her next one.

In a Cottage In a Wood was a good thriller in the style of the recently inundated unreliable narrator trope. Specifically, the narrator in this book reminded me of the narrator in Girl on a Train. I'm not really a lover of unreliable narrators, particularly when their drinking is so excessive that it negatively impacts ability to reason and remember their own actions. I have less sympathy for these narrators. I keep thinking, "if you can't remember if you locked the door or not, maybe you shouldn't drink to blackout levels!!!"

In the first hundred pages or so, I wasn't quite sure about the nature of the mysteriousness of Neve's cottage. Who left the garbage in the cottage before she moved in? Who kept turning on her radio when she left the house? Who moved the ax on top of the woodpile? Was this a modern-day ghost story or was there a nefarious stranger meddling in Neve's business? This premise alone was enough to keep me reading.

This was a good thriller but not an exceptional one.
