PS, I Love You was quite unlike any book I'd read at the time (2005) and being in my early twenties, I found it deeply touching. So I was intrigued to see a sequel.

While it was lovely to revisit Holly and her motley crew of supporters, the story didn't tug on my heartstrings as much as the first - which makes me sound heartless, because so much of the story is very sad and deals with grief, death, legacy, family, etc. But the emotional connection just wasn't as strong for me this time. Perhaps because I could detect an element of self-consciousness in the storytelling this time, and was always very aware I was reading a sequel, rather than losing myself in the story and the characters the way I did the first time.

Having said that, it's an enjoyable read (if that's the right word) for the most part.

With thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC.

This is my second Cecelia Ahern novel, the first be PS, I Love You. Postscript is the follow up story of Holly's journey after her husband died. Set 7 years after his death, Cecelia takes us on Holly's new journey of finding eventual peace. This book have closure to the original story with love, compassion and determination. Certainly won't be my last of Cecelia's novels.

My favorite book currently this month. I love the first book and was not sure how the sequel would work but it was great. I was an emotional reckoning but I love the sad ones. The only thing I disliked was the relationship drama Holly was going through. I did not think it was necessary and Holly and Gabriel could’ve just had deep conversations after the long days. There was no support or communication which in the end will get you nowhere. I just wanted a strong healthy relationship. But all the characters going through the terminal illnesses were beautiful and I love that Holly learned more about Gerry through those experiences.

“I should have known there is no end to the loss that we can experience but neither is there to the knowledge and growth that arises because of it and in spite of it” page 94
“I hate goodbyes but hating them is never a justification to stay” pg 171

It is said that the first book in the series is always the best. But now I see that the second book can be just as wonderful as the first one. I adore how Cecilia Ahern makes such topics as death and loss seem not so disastrous. I was laughing often while I was reading the book and I was crying even more times. But by the end, I was feeling peaceful and delighted. I am very happy to finish this year with such a great read!

When the original book is one of your favourites, the idea of a sequel is always a little daunting; will the characters still be as relatable as they were on the first read through of the original? Will it change the way you feel about the first book? Will you like it?

Thankfully, I needn't have worried about any of the above.

Postscript is a perfect sequel to P.S I Love You. It's beautifully written, hits the right notes of emotion and keeps faithfully true to the characters who were so strikingly portrayed and bought to life in the previous book.

It's tale of life after loss, of staying true to yourself and of hope even in the face of sadness. It's about friendship, it's about making a difference and it's about love.

A brilliant read and highly recommended.
