Still really enjoying this series. I loved the time travel and Nico's development. Molly seemed a little too baby-ish for her age in this one. Are they going to let Gert come back somehow? I hope so.

The first act, featuring the Runaways confused in New York and dealing with Kingpin and The Punisher, feels out of place and definitely not a [a:Brian K Vaughan|2969494|Brian K Vaughan|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] comic. But it sets up a great set of four comics that wonderfully examines these kids' lives and modern adolescence without being too weighty. A slew of new characters are introduced, with only one making it to the end of the book. The new folk and location gets confusing at times, but are ultimately fun. [a:Joss Whedon|18015|Joss Whedon|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1207493687p2/18015.jpg] simultaneously manages to give the Runaways new foes while keeping the Pride relevant. He knows how to play nice with other people's toys.

If you're jumping into Runways just because of Joss Whedon do yourself a favor and stop, go back and start with book one. It's worth it. Discover Brian K. Vaughan. He's a wonderful writer and this is a great series. Heck, Joss Whedon took over writing because he was a fan of Runaways!

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I wish Whedon hadn't taken over writing Runaways. There was just something off about the story and the characters. I can't put my finger on it.

The story was a little all over the place (ah, kind of literally since it involves time travel) and starts off randomly with the gang in New York talking to the Kingpin. Why are the kids in the New York when they're on the run from super heroes? There has got to be a thousand other cities they could have gone to instead. And why is Chase freaking out about She Hulk? The only other time the kids were in New York Chase was the one who told Nico to be cool and not freak out about She Hulk.

*Shrugs*

Mostly I just miss Brian K. Vaughan.

I didn't know about this series, but Whedon's name attracted me. Turns out the series was started by Brian K. Vaughn as well. Well, it is awesome. Artwork great, story solid, and overall terrifically entertaining. I am relunctant to start a series like this in the middle, but I caught up fairly quickly and didn't feel lost at all. Thanks for a great read!

This volume does not pick up where the last left off. Instead, the Runaways are in NYC trying to make a deal with Kingpin. He requests a job from them, which leads to tech that their parents had made, which leads to them going back in time. They find themselves in 1907 New York City and in the midst of a turf war between various groups of special powered people from that time period. They also find themselves up against Gert's parents. Will they make it back to their own time? Will they all make it alive? And what of their new friends they made in the past?

Man, there was a lot of plot shoved into this one volume, and while it's interesting, it gets convoluted at points. Nevermind that's there is a severe jump in continuity from the end of the last volume. If it had been a stand-alone series & fleshed out a little bit so that it was less jumpy, it might have been better.

tbh wasnt a fan of sex pest whedon taking on CSA. like at all. felt really awful how often it was played for laughs. Also sending your teens into the past to call them slurs and only having them call that out or respond to it like, 1/10 times is a choice. Also torturing Nico to unlock her "true powers" when it seems like she really just needed a bigger vocabulary. Also Xavin deciding his "true form" was a woman seemed off considering her entire arc seemed to be about exploring gender outside the binary, and figuring out who he was outside of her relationship with K, so just being like "Oh I guess you were right I should just be a girl!" was weird as hell. Overall just felt like a bunch of throwaway characters were introduced and thrown away, opportunities for real moments were squandered, and it was a lot of teen drama with little substance, even though the substance was there to explore were the author not Whedon. For example: why does Xavin default to a Black person in their human form? She seems to understand human race relations enough to disguise himself as a white man in the past (and get a double whammy of homophobia and racism when the disguise is dropped, thanks that was very necessary). So why not be white all the time? Xavin's whole "why won't you love me" fuckery is so much less interesting than a genuine exploration of their identity, and it feels shitty that it just keeps getting overlooked in favor of more relationship drama spinning its wheels and going nowhere.

I said "I hate joss whedon" so much every five pages

basically anything that is Nice abt the bb runaways and how normalized their identities are joss went fuck you and otherized them every chance he got
tw for racism, orientalism, sexism, homophobia, YOU NAME IT??? JOSS DID IT

nico got called:
- a chinese dog
- a "chinee"
- an Oriental
- oh and don't forget her great-grandmother torturing her bc joss likes to torture women

xavin, a:
- GENDERQUEER/GENDER-NEUTRAL GREEN ALIEN
- got called a "n*gress" in their black female form
- and someone like basically ran off and barfed when they kissed their fiancee karolina

I honestly like rage blacked out as I sped-read this and I had to go back and identify the few plot points there were this entire issue was unnecessary and you know, You Just Know, that people get sent back in time so everyone can spit on them for being Different from a straight cis white man and honestly eat shit joss whedon

OH I FORGOT THE CHILD BRIDE THERE WAS LIKE A TWELVE YEAR OLD GIRL STAND-IN FOR MOLLY GETTING RAPED AND BEATEN BY HER HUSBAND WHAT THE FUCK, DUDE

Reading through this quickly in large doses - the changes in artist are pretty jarring. Alphona and Miyazawa are both good, though.

I really like the Runaways series, and I would say I am totally gaybones for Whedon (that's a mixture of 30 Rock reference and profession of my love for Joss).
However, I was disappointed by this volume, collecting Runaways issues 25-30, the group begins by following in the parents footsteps (working for the villian Kingpin), being attacked by Punisher (who gets kicked in the nuts (HILARIOUS!)), and going back to 1907 where they meet early superheroes called Wonders. But it's not very coherrent, and it lacks Vaughan's deft and hilarious writing. Which is wierd, because Whedon is hilarious, smart-mouthed, clever, and even capable of the dramatic gravitas the Victor storyline requires. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was underwhelmed.
