I loved hearing about Drew's path to her current career and about her experiences and positionality as a woman of color in the art world. I know that these books are brief, but I wish there was a little more discussion and analysis of the work she was able to move forward in each of her positions, which sometimes felt a little glossed over at a high-level. In the end, I appreciated hearing about her work and efforts to raise awareness around contemporary art by artists of color and think that this is an excellent starting point to a world in which I, and others, are unfamiliar with.

i’m enjoying this collection a lot

This was honestly such a good short read. It gave great insight for me on the realities of the art work for some and that there is hope for me in finding a job. There are so many opportunities out there and so I shouldn’t count myself out or let the imposter syndrome get to me.

A heartfelt short memior of a black person's connection to and journey with art. I found the insight into their breaking into historically white washes spaces to be very poignant and important.

An informative and inspiring recounting of writer, activist, and curator Kimberly Drew's experiences as a young Black woman looking to break into the art world. I really enjoyed reading Drew's harrowing experiences of being one of the only women of color in her field of work and how she used her passion for art to uplift unknown Black artists in history via her Tumblr blog. I also really enjoyed the descriptions of specific artworks as it really helped paint a picture (no pun intended!) while reading. Definitely one of the stronger pocket books in this collection!

This was a pleasant simple read. Their personal work in museums and introduction to it was interesting to learn.

The information didn't go as deeply as I would have liked, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from enjoying this as light nonfiction focused on the American/Western art scene.

With my limited exposure to the art world as a self-taught artist growing up and one art history elective, I was familiar with what she was referencing. As I was expecting a deeper dive from a museum worker, the book did leave me wanting more.
