It's overall 4 / 4.2 stars for me, easier to read compared to the previous two books because I am already familiar with the lore, and there are not too many new characters that come into the plot.
Once again the side-character interaction takes the spotlight for me (especially between Thurvishar & Senera, Grizzt & Valathea also great addition to the cast) While Kihrin still is Kihrin which is not that good in my opinion as the main character. (Passable, but not great).
A missed opportunity to explore more background for the eight immortals since they take quite big set pieces on the plot. For example between Argas & Taja which we can see at the beginning of the book but not justified enough for what happened later. (Please also provide more story about the dragon, since each of them is also interesting, whether from the identities, ability, and their own cornerstones)
Finally, Jenn Lyons steps up the scale of battle scenes which is one of the weak points in previous entries which is good even though there is room for improvement but overall good.
The ending also interesting, which I expect to read within this month.

I'm ending this series with a very mixed feeling. I really have loved Lyons' world and characters. This books are funny with robust characters and fantastic dialogue. But the narrative devices that were a little confusing in the first book have muddled everything for me by the third. I am not new to epic fantasy, but I had a hell of a time keeping track of the who and the what and the where and the when. A flowchart should come complementary with each book.

I liked this series. I just wish I could love it.

So, this is a fun one. On the whole I don't know that I liked this installment MORE than the first two, but the series shift was so distinct and I really did enjoy this that I feel like 4 stars is a fair rating. This book is much more linear in focus, the timelines all coming together and the setup for the finale of this series is being laid. There were some great moments in this book, I wouldn't say I found myself exceptionally compelled by some of the more "emotional" scenes. I think that is due to the fact that we have been thrust into this world so aggressively while I love the characters I don't feel a lot of empathy from them, being so removed from how the story was told in books 1 and 2. That being said, I did really enjoy how the characters romantic relationships developed and just eat up all the extremely diverse cultures that Lyons has been able to create within this world. Onto the next!

I continue to be fascinated with the complexity of this story. I know I have missed things but I do not mind because of what I do catch. Those aha! moments are amazing, as are all the quips and character interactions. I do not know how Lyons created, balanced, and then continues to develop so many characters. See my youtube channel (linked in my profile) for more in-depth thoughts.

Holy shit.

I promise you, you are not ready for this book. In every way imaginable, you are not prepared for everything this book is going to throw into your face.

And yeah, it's a 27 hour audio listen. Several hundred pages.

I made my way through it in about 24 hours. (Audio at 2x - no magic needed).

I am also insanely glad that I waited to read it until I had my hands on the next book in the series [Edited. Didn't realize until a moment ago that it is a 5 book serie]. Because now I don't have to torture myself into wondering what will happen next. I'm just going to go find out.

Wish me luck. I'll see you on the other side.
