1.5 ⭐ This was one of the most juvenile romance stories I have read in a long time with bland characterization, weak writing, and a half hearted follow through to every thing that the author had crammed into the story.

For the story, it felt like the author went to a writing class that went over some of the most standard romance story lines that existed, fell asleep in the middle of it, and wrote this story based off of those barely started class notes. It is formulaic to an almost concerning degree on nearly every page, and yet there is absolutely no follow through. The hook of any book, but especially romance novels, is the introspection and study of characters through their thoughts and feelings. How does the character feel? Why do they feel that? What are they thinking? A romance novel is often built solely off of the emotional back and forth of the primary lead as they struggle over their attraction and falling in love with the secondary lead for some reason.

The only occasional look into what Persephone was feeling we got was a couple of sentences that stated her emotional state. She was angry. She was sad. She was embarrassed. Stated with the tact and skill of a seventh grader writing their first short story, the story refused to go any further. Persephone is angry now, the end. Now onto the next sentence that somehow manages to not expand on anything.

And Persephone is just a childish brat who refuses to have a single reasonable thought, and believes she knows everything when in fact it is established that she likely didn't even know what a Pizza Roll was four years prior. She is actually a decent writing of someone who takes a cause on, like environmentalism, movements against sexual violence, or race equality, and decides to put herself at the middle of the narrative as the one person with a correct opinion, without even bothering to learn what the hell she is talking about or how best to help the people actually affected. The author doesn't execute it that way, of course, everyone just saying shes right in the end even if she was just proven wrong in multiple ways by those affected.

The sex scenes are a solid meh, there is absolutely nothing incredible or even vaguely intriguing, but if you haven't read very many explicit novels I guess then maybe you could be a bit impressed. The dialogue caused me to scoff multiple times at the end, and the only singular piece of the entire story that was vaguely different was that the female lead kind of got revenge in the end instead of just preaching good values and forgiveness, but even that felt severely mishandled. Because she did not get it against the attempted sexual assaulter, thief, and black mailer, no, he got off with a firm talking to and a threat. Instead she really put it to the woman who had done a few not great things, but nothing more than a fireable offense to be honest. #GirlPower, I guess.

This book was dull. It had no passion in it, and even the blandest Amish romance manages to have a bit of that. Will not be continuing the series.

I read the book in one day. I was so enamored by it. I love Greek mythology and loved this retelling. I enjoyed the idea of it because there’s not a lot about hades and Persephone. It felt a little shallow though but again it’s just a fun romance. I didn’t like how they throw you a little curve ball in the last fifty pages and it’s not explained at all really and doesn’t make any significant impact. But it was a good read and super quick for me. Can’t wait to read the next.

It took me months to finish because it was so slow.
