as ever w short stories, this swung from excellent to clumsy, but overall full of life and heart. had never read anything from a hawaiian author so happy to have expanded my horizons. i recommend it for its 2nd half

This has been on my ‘to read’ list for a while and so I was excited to get my hands on a copy 😊

‘Temporary Dwellers’ was heated 🔥 I thoroughly enjoyed her coming to terms with her counterpart and how the rebellion came to light.
Fucking with someone who looks like you must also be quite the trip 😅

I thoroughly loved ‘Ms. Amelia’s Salon for Women in Charge’. Although I’ve not seen the episode of Black Mirror, it reminded me of clips I’d seen of the one where they exchange goods and services for ‘popularity’ and couldn’t have access to certain items if their rating fell under a certain number of stars 😳
The brusque nature of the story was also what I loved about it 😂

‘Aiko, the Writer’ got me in my feelings! I’d never heard about the Night Marchers before so that was also educational (and quite frightening) 😫

‘Touch Me Like One of Your Island Girls’ was alluring. Friendships like Patti and Mehana’s are so common (and I say this with experience 🥲)!

All in all, a cool collection of stories. I have learned so much about Hawaii, having been completely ignorant before, so thank you Megan Kamalei Kakimoto. 3.5 out of 5 stars for me, thank you ✨

short story collections are super hit or miss. i’ve never read one that is a 5 star. but i do think this is an important perspective. i’ve never read anything set in hawaii and especially not something written by an indigenous hawaiian. you definitely get some history and folklore in here. many stories explore girlhood and sexuality. a weird girl book for sure
