This was a dense book that dealt with some hard-hitting topics. I liked are main characters because they seemed real and were flawed.
I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop and see them grow as characters. I felt like the plot did lag in some areas, but overall was good!

Such a wonderfully written book about hard topics. Not only are the main characters growing up, but they are both also dealing with some heavy trauma.

Within this book you read about how two troubled people can lean on one another and heal together. This book is written very realistic, not like how some other authors make it hard to believe just for that emotional attachments that keep readers invested. It covers addiction, grief, trauma, disabilities, among others as well. This isnt your typical light and fluffy read, so make sure to check the trigger warnings prior to reading the book.

This book is for anyone who needs to feel something after reading. Its for the people who want to reach in and hug the characters and help them navigate their problems. its for the people who believe in second chances. But honestly, this should be a book that everyone reads as its the perfect coming of age book.

Ethan and Rebecca become fast friends when Ethan comes to live with his grandparents who live next door to Rebecca and her family. The two are adventurous and love spending time together, but every visit comes to an end. Ethan’s mom struggles with substance abuse issues and she sporadically leaves Ethan to live with his grandparents, but always to returns for him. Ethan is returning for the first time in three years and a lot has happened to both Ethan and Rebecca since the last time they have seen each other. Rebecca was in a car accident two years ago that resulted in her father’s death and left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Ethan has been caring for his mom and trying to keep her safe from herself and her drug use. This story follows Ethan and Rebecca as the reunite and discover what their relationship looks like after all they have been through.

Ethan and Rebecca are both navigating the typical challenges of growing up on top of circumstances that are unique to them. I have not personally experienced any of the challenges that Rebecca or Ethan have, but I still found the book and characters to be relatable. I definitely shed some tears throughout and loved to see the growth of the characters of the course of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Inkyard Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Told in 'before' and 'now' chapters, this is the story of Rebecca and Ethan - two teenagers whose friendship has been tested by distance and circumstance. Ethan and Rebecca's bond is strengthened each time Ethan comes to live with his grandparents next door to Rebecca's family. The bond is weakened every time Ethan's drug-addicted mother comes to take him back home several states away. Ethan's whole life has been focused on caring for his mother and trying to keep her clean, or at least alive, leaving very little time to care deeply for anyone else. Wild child Rebecca is mourning the death of her beloved father, and her own paralysis, after an auto accident 2 years ago for which she blames herself. The story is about their complicated family relationships, their own fraught relationship and also about navigating life as a wheelchair user. It's a YA love story between kids with more than their share of adverse childhood experiences.
