I should know by now that anything with [a:Emily Henry|13905555|Emily Henry|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1573928938p2/13905555.jpg]’s name is going to be pure gold. This rocked me to the core. I loved Alex so very much and felt like Poppy just got me, like she understands me without judging me.

“You can’t outrun yourself. Not your history, not your fears, not the parts of yourself you’re worried are wrong.”

So far and by far, this has been my favorite read of 2021. I knew Emily Henry was an excellent writer but, oh boy, this book blew my mind into a million little pieces. Just like [b:Beach Read|52867387|Beach Read|Emily Henry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1589881197l/52867387._SX50_.jpg|67832247], this book speaks to me in more ways than one and I’ll never be able to comprehend how a human being can string simple words together and make it into this beautiful thing I just want to carry and protect forever.

There are good books and then there are books like this one that make you feel you were put in this universe to read that work of art at that specific moment. Like you were created to discover this little masterpiece. I loved how this was a romcom, yes, but that is not all there is to it. Emily Henry made sure to include the hardships of life. How just being with someone will not bring you absolute happiness and how a person's happiness doesn't depend on their partner. How everyone needs to go to therapy because we're all (hopefully) healing from past trauma. How if you want something, you need to go out and get it for yourself. All of this made this book all the more sweeter.

“It’s not your job to make me happy, okay? You can’t make anyone happy. I’m happy just because you exist, and that’s as much of my happiness as you have control over.”

I loved Poppy and Alex. But more than that, they made me feel seen and like my feelings are valid. Like they are real people who were put on this earth to tell me: you matter. I loved loved loved their relationship, the different facets of their friendship and how it evolved over the years until it had no other choice but to explode into this beautiful thing. That type of connection is what I aspire to have with someone one day. And yes, this is fiction, but Poppy and Alex made me feel like that is attainable, like I just have to wait for the right person.

“When I look back up at him, he’s beaming at me, and I think, I love you more now than I ever have. How is it possible that this keeps happening with him?”

When we meet Poppy, she’s not a very happy person, and she knows that what’s missing in her life is having her friend back. Only, she doesn’t quite know how to bring things back to what they were. And so we start to understand their relationship, sometimes complicated, sometimes fun (all the time right) and how things went wrong.

“Alex,” I plead, knotting my hands into his hair, “stop making me wait for you.”
“Stop being impatient,” he teases. “I’ve waited twelve years. I want this to last.”

As with every hero I fall madly in love with, Alex is a literal dream come true. He’s fun, he’s genuinely nice and an honest to god good person, he doesn’t judge Poppy and even though they are polar opposites, they just work together. Their relationship is one of cero judgment, of always, no matter what, being there for each other, of understanding and trust and sometimes fun banter. But the thing that stands out the most to me is these people love each other so much, so deeply.

He breaks off, shaking his head again. The tears in his eyes make them look like the surface of some river, dangerous and wild and gorgeous. “I don’t know how to love someone as much as I love you”

“I still have a lot to figure out, but the one thing I know is, wherever you are, that’s where I belong. I’ll never belong anywhere like I belong with you. No matter what I’m feeling, I want you next to me. You’re home to me, Alex.”

I feel like I’ve never truly given the friends to lovers trope a chance and now I feel like I’ve been missing out. My default setting is always picking up an enemies to lovers book but after this (and because of it) I’ll definitely be reading more friends to lovers romcoms. Also, can’t wait for Emily Henry’s next work of art. I’ll read this girl’s grocery list if she so much as waves it in my direction.
