I had to read this for school, year 11 English. For a book we have to read for school, it wasn't too bad and was easy to follow. I didn't hate it yet didn't love it, but the story was captivating enough to read it all in a day, experiencing all the events of Montana in 1948 through the eyes of 12 year old David, and how it changed his family forever. “Don't blame Montana! Don't ever blame Montana!”

No rating. Read it to help with my sister homework. Can’t entirely really exactly what I thought. But I do now it was a lot. I think there was an attempt on to many themes without actually do any successfully. The way the women written and I think sexualised was unhealthy. Especially in contents of the book. However, I am aware of year it was written and as well by male that understand that he does have the hindsight as we do now.

This is a story of the events that defined a family in a small very small town, written years after the fact. It's great storytelling and not over done. In it we meet David, the twelve year old son of the local sheriff and hear the story told through his eyes. His family is fairly well off for the time period, both parents are working and can afford to have a local Sioux woman to keep an eye on David. David's grandfather was also sheriff for many years and the family has had its hand in the town for some time. David's uncle, brother to his father, is the local doctor and also a local war hero. It apparent he's looks upon with more esteem than his father, as least in the eyes of his grandfather. But what happens when the walls come tumbling down on a hero? What happens when the law has to decide between what is right and family? This is a short story about choices and making the decision between family and justice, no matter the person. It's really well done, gripping, and you feel like you're right in the midst of then tension and drama.

Originally, I picked up this book at a used bookstore because there was a blurb from Louise Erdich on the cover, but then when I heard Anne Bogel recommend it to someone because they loved Kent Haruf, I immediately bumped it up to the top of my TBR pile.

When their beloved housekeeper, a Sioux woman named Marie Little Soldier, falls ill and vehemently resists seeing the doctor, the revelations that come to light forever alter young David Hayden's view of his family and community. I can't say too much without ruining the plot, so I'll leave it at that and just tell you to go read it and then email me so we can talk about it.

If you combined the writing and storytelling style of Haruf with the Indian reservation setting of Erdich's work, you'd get this book. I loved it and it broke my heart a bit.

This is a sparse, powerful book, much like the Montana landscape. It gets its message across succinctly and starkly.

Incredible. Picked this up at the thrift store and had no idea what it was. Couldn’t put it down.
