3.4 AVERAGE

dark emotional mysterious tense

no rating bc there were some real standouts here, some mid ones, but also some really bad ones that felt like pulling teeth to get through (specifically the one with serious fat phobia that grossed me out)

the standouts for me though
- pythia by olivie blake
- the hare and the hound by kelly andrew
- weekend at bertie’s by m.l. rio
- the professor of ontography by helen grant
- phobos by tori bovalino

any of these alone made it worth the read

Tough because I REALLY loved some of these and I’d love for them to be fully fleshed out books, but most were just meh for me (with one that I didn’t care for at all). Found some new authors to look into which is always great

While I'm not a big fan of short stories I was intrigued by the dark academia aspect and thought I'd give these a try. The standout story was The Hare and the Hound by Kelly Andrew! While I liked some of the stories, I didn't get a "dark academia" feel from most of them. X House, Phobos, and The Professor of Ontography were the stories that solidly hit that mark.

1000 Ships by Kate Weinberg - 2/5 - A story of a student dating her professor, which is supposed to be a sort of prequel story to an existing full length novel by the author. I did not like the concept or the characters but the writing was good.

Pythia by Olivie Blake - 4/5 - Interesting mix of a Q&A transcript with narrative prose. This read more like sci-fi / speculation fiction.

Sabbatical by James Tate Hill - 2/5 - This seems like a play on Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart but it fell flat for me.

X House by J.T Ellison - 3/5 - Solidly dark academia, featuring a clique of schoolgirls and mysterious deaths at a boarding school.

The Hare and the Hound by Kelly Andrew - 5/5 - A creepy folklore inspired horror story in a university setting, with a satisfying payoff.

The Ravages by Layne Fargo - 3/5 - A sapphic story about slighted lovers and revenge in a library.

Four Funerals by David Bell - 1/5 - This is about a school shooting. No thank you.

Weekend at Berties by M.L Rio - 3/5 - This is basically a moral "what if?", revolving around two students who find their professor dead in her home.

The Unknowable Pleasures by Susie Yang - 3/5 - Intriguing exploration of a student's growing obsessed with another student's relationship, but the ending was anticlimactic.

Phobos by Tori Bovalino - 4/5 - As the final part of the initiation rite to join an elite secret society, a scholarship student at a top university must complete a disturbing task.

The Professor of Ontography by Helen Grant - 4/5 - Two university students attempt to learn more about the mysterious Department of Ontography. CREEPY.

Playing by Phoebe Wynne -2/5 - I knew where this story was going immediately. Predictable and hated the character.
