I tend to find that anthologies are great but can also be filled with hits and misses, not saying that any of the stories were bad, just that with some outstanding ones the ones that lacked that were quite obvious. I loved a few and some I found myself disappointed in but I think it’s due to the fact that putting the same genre or groupings together it can become a bit tedious. Having said that, I did love the dark, shady and somewhat macabre elements that shone through most of these works. Overall this is definitely a worthy edition to my bookshelves.

Let me tell you, the SECOND I saw Olivie Blake had a short story in this anthology I was SOLD.

‘In These Hallowed Halls’ is a dark academia short story collection from various authors and it was honestly such a fun ride!

With any collections like this, you always find there are some that are more standout than others, which, was also the case here - most notably for me - Pythia by Olivie Blake, The Hare and the Hound by Kelly Andrew and The Professor of Ontography by Helen Grant were my standout favourites.

However, there wasn’t any I didn’t enjoy! I loved the dark academia vibes throughout (and the different takes on what this is!) and the writing styles of all the authors was very enjoyable and I’ll be certainly checking out some more published works by the authors. If dark academia is your thing, you’re going to love this!

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!

1000 Ships by Kate Weinberg ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wished this was a full novel, I’d read it! Creepy weirdo professor, clearly with secrets & made me want to read more of this authors books!

Pythia by Olivia Blake ⭐️⭐️
I wanted to love this just because it’s Olivia Blake but it’s about a “Magical Supercomputer” not my vibe at all

Sabbatical by James Tate Hill ⭐️⭐️
Didn’t grip me personally! From reviews others seemed to enjoy this one so just my personal taste I think.

The Hare & The Hound by Kelly Andrew ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of my favourite, starts off with some divination so I was immediately interested! You can see the twist coming a mile off but very much enjoyed it still

X House by J.T Ellison ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Loved this one, all girls school, bitchy clique & a killer on the loose!

The Ravages by Layne Fargo ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The story where the book title comes from ‘“greetings to the spirits who reside in these hallowed halls”

Four Funerals by David Bell ⭐️⭐️
Hmm not sure I’d really class this one as true Acedemia tbh.

The Unknowable Pleasures by Susie Yang ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ooh this one left me thinking! I wanted more go read, I wanted to know more. Will be looking up this authors books

Some of the short stories had some great D.A vibes. I loved:
1000 ships
Pythia
The Hare and the hound
The ravages.

Others weren’t so much, they just took place in a school-like setting? Lacking a bit of the dark vibes.
