I ultimately really liked this book, but I took a while to get into. This was the third time I picked it up, so I guess third time’s the charm?

I think it took about 200 pages before I was terribly drawn in, and then once Sofia was introduced I was hooked! There were so many little tidbits throughout the book that made great jokes, great insights, or sweet moments. It did take a while to get into the style, but once you sink into it and understand the tone and quips it was masterful! The characters are all SO lovable. There were just enough loose ends tied up nicely and mysteries left to ponder that it was a good balance that didn’t feel forced.

This one was a really fun one to read slowly.

The prose reminded me a lot of books like All The Light We Cannot See and Bel Canto (Bel Canto in many ways)

I ended up reading a few other books while I was reading this one but it was always really nice to come back to it when my hold came up again at the library, or the end of the day

This is a beautiful book that had me feeling all sorts of things, learned me some Russian history and had me laughing more than I thought a book about a man in an early 20th century Russian hotel could.

Audiobook was automatically returned on Libby. Very slow plot, but the writing is charming. I'll pick this back up when I have time.
