Only reason it’s 3 star and not 2 is the connection with tai-pan. Nothing got resolved with the various plots, the ending is a cop out. Quite disappointed in this one.

What a book! At over 1100 pages it is quite a read, a book full of intrigue and fantastic characters and really gets into the underbelly and machinations of Hong Kong.
Although fiction, the plots and characters and organisations are loosely based on real persons and companies.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and a direct sequel would have been wonderful (author passed away), there is a series sequel but it isn't direct. It was nice to see how this book also tied together pasts and characters from previous books like Marlowe, West and the new generations of Chens, Struans, Brocks (Gornt).
The book is full of action including some romance, espionage, politics, kidnapping, hostile take overs, land slides, horse racing, and fires.
The one thing I would say is the book may be dated in its portrayal of the Asian population and its dialogue although it often elicts a chuckle regarding one eyed monks and golden pubics.
A fantastic entry to the series and I would have loved a sequel to see what happens next in Hong Kong. I don't think Whirlwind will be my cup of tea but we will see.
