The escalation of the conflict with the Whisperers is what happens in this volume. There is a lot of action and a few plot twists that challenge what you would expect to see from established characters.

By the end of the series, Kirkman takes Negan, the second-most despicable character (The Governor is worse) in the series and makes him likable. Hats off. (sorry, Glenn. Bad pun)

Spoiler
Rick hears the "ocean of the dead" approaching and riders head out to try to peel off groups of the undead and lead them into the ocean. Eugene, Andrea, Heath, Dwight, and others head out. The remaining residents of Alexanderia watch the undead fall into trenches and onto spikes. But the trenches fill and the undead begin walking over their brethern towards Alexandria.
Jesus and Michonne lead off a group of the undead. Michonne dismounts to attack their group of the horde, calling on Jesus to do the same. They take turns, slicing down 10 undead, remounting, and allowing the other to kill.
Back in Alexanderia, the undead press up against the fence. Negan pushes everyone aside and attacks the undead, stabbing them through the fence with a knife. Rick allows it and encourages others to join. The undead eventually press up against the fence and the entire gate collapses in. Everyone flees and Rick collapses due to his bad leg. Negan scoops him up and helps him to a house to find shelter.
Meanwhile, a group of Saviors watch the undead attack Alexandria.
Maggie and company see the attack, too. Michonne and Jesus find them and explains. Maggie and Dante join them to lead the undead away from Alexandria.
Alexandria is flooded with the undead. Andrea brings a horn and blows it, attracting the undead to follow her away.
Negan and Rick share the worst thing they've done. Rick's is that he has survived, while others who should have didn't. Negan's is that he didn't bury his wife. He couldn't kill her after she turned and, after someone else did it, he left her to rot, because he couldn't bring himself to see her like that. After waiting, Negan opens the door, kills some of the undead outside, until he is overwhelmed. Rick shoots some zombies and Negan is able to flee back inside. They decide to do the same at the back door, back and forth, until they are able to get somewhere better.
At one point, Siddiq hears a voice on the radio, asking for Eugene.
The undead are falling into the ocean in droves. Everyone agrees to fish elsewhere for a while.
Eugene, Andrea, and some others are caught between two undead groups. Eugene tries to go back, to distract the undead while everyone escapes, but his horse is pulled down. As the undead close in, Andrea shoots a rifle, killing many and pulling Eugene up. They fight their way out, only to discover that Andrea has been bitten in the neck. She commands everyone to continue working.
Rick and the inhabitants of Alexandria finally clear it of the undead. He finds Carl also fighting off the undead and them embrace. However, their joy is interrupted by the arrival of Sherry with some of the Saviors. They're sick of Rick as leader and have chosen to leave. Sherry is infuriated to find Negan in Alexandria. Rick commands that everyone lower their weapons and asks to speak with Sherry privately, as two leaders. Sherry becomes more and more furious, eventually attacking Rick and trying to strangle him. He shoves her back and she bangs her head and dies.
Andrea enters and collapses into Rick's arms. Dwight comes in and demands to know what happened with Sherry.
Andrea says her goodbyes to people. She encourages Carl to make sure that Lydia makes him happy and that he makes her happy. No one is special or unique, happiness is what matters. People filter in to her. Rick despairs, wondering how he can go on without her. She insists - nay, demands! that he does. He's worked too hard for all this. What's it for, do-doo-dooo. Eventually, she dies and Rick can't bring himself to kill her before she resurrects, which she eventually does and attacks him. He stabs her in the head and she dies.
Rick goes outside, despondent, and the Alexandrians gather around him to show their support. Andrea and Sherry are buried.
Meanwhile, Dwight has rounded up the Saviors, putting them to work patching up Alexandria. When they find out that Sherry has been killed, they threaten war between them. Negan strides forward and tells them that this isn't a dick measuring contest. Rick provides them with a network, with safety, with stability. The Saviors then retreat back to their factory, agreeing to continue the alliance.
Father Gabriel is found and buried.

I picked this one up and thought to myself “I need to stop reading these. I just can’t do anymore.” And then I proceeded to get sucked into another volume, ogling the creepy, detailed drawings and gasping at the twists
SpoilerAndrea?! Is NO ONE SACRED in this story?!
. So, yet again, I am wowed by the artwork, floored by the story, and find myself bouncing my foot impatiently for the next volume!

This covers comic issues 163-168. This continues to cover the war with the Whisperers. Only, the Whisperers have drawn a huge herd to the communities fighting against them. This volume covers the dealing with it. I liked seeing people other than Rick dealing with things and the focus on multiple people doing their part to fix the problem was quite good.

There is a SAD bit in this, it nearly made me cry. So, be warned.

I read this in about 30 minutes, I couldn't put it down. Lots of tension and drama here.
