Breathtaking. I couldn't put it down. Harry and Lucinda have done a wonderful job of concluding a long, complex epic story spanning generations over 8 books in a believable, heart breaking, uplifting way that came together in a way that completely surprised me over and over. All loose ends tied up in a great and satisfying way. I got to the end and it made me want to go back and read them all again from start to finish. I was completely transported. A beautiful story of love, sisterhood and family.
Super cheesy (the anagram names! Really obvious secret letter codes! So many private jets and yachts!) but nice to have a conclusion to the 7 other books in the series.
slow-paced
I have a love-hate relationship with this book. Did I think all the answers to my questions throughout the series were answered? Yes. Were they answered well? Not always. Did I finish it in a matter of days because I was desperate and excited to know how the series ended? Yes. Did I get a bit emotional at certain points? Yes. But I think that was more to do with the amount of time I’d invested in this series up to now and how attached I’d grown to certain characters but in all honestly this book infuriated me. Of course, I read this wanting to know the story or Pa Salt, but my god did it drag on. I LOVED that he was the boy from Bel’s story and Bo from Ally’s great-parents story but I think that’s because I loved those two books the most. How Pa did not know Elle was with Kreeg that whole time? Ridiculous, and honestly didn’t make sense with how intelligent his character was made out to be throughout the whole series…like, that was obvious from the moment they went to separate hotel rooms! In contrast to the dragged out life story, the story of the girls adoptions felt rushed and repetitive for each sister. And don’t even get me started on Zed just showing up to Atlantis one day to brag in their faces about the Pearl. Which, might I add, seemed obvious would end up in his hands but him just getting it at the end felt so rushed and him showing up when they were all there just felt off to me. One note I’d also like to rant about, regarding the series in general, why the hell did all the sisters have to find a romantic partner? Most of the historical stories across all the books centred on strong, independent women. Granted, there were romantic elements across them all - which I enjoyed for the most part - but a lot of these women were successful without a or a partner. Yet, the 6 adopted sisters miraculously found romantic partners during the year after Pa’s ‘death’. Some of these relationships were so rushed too, it just didn’t seem necessary to me and took away the importance of their journeys of self-discovery.
