Over the Top is exactly what you expect and not at all what you expect. It’s a celebrity memoir, but JVN takes it to the next level. He’s so open and raw. I appreciated that so much. I feel weird rating it because of the subject and because it’s his life story. It was great, flowed well, and had a good balance of laughter and heartache. Some reviewers didn’t like a few of the tangents, but they seemed natural to me. But then again, I’m all for a good tangent. I also got to walk away with one of my favorite quotes ever.
“I might look like sixteenth-century Jesus, but sometimes I struggle with being the landlord of Petty Lane.”

This was quick listen (audiobook)- touching, often hilarious and relatable, also very honest and raw. I really enjoyed this and would recommend the audio version as Jonathan’s animated narration is a true gift to his story’s delivery!
I love JVN and so I loved the chance to hear more from him and know more about him. This book reminded me of reading Ellen’s books because I’m both I could SO CLEARLY hear their voices as if they were reading the book to me themselves. Wasn’t the best piece of writing and the message got a little repetitive at the end but overall loved the message so can’t complain about driving it home!
Just what you would expect, in the very best way. But also full of unexpected moments that are super powerful... or should I say gorgeous?
Listened to this one and wouldn't do it any other way.

I read a lot of the book in JVN's voice (except when he asks you to read a paragraph as Moira Rose from Schitts Creek...I loved that!). It seemed like one story after another after another that were loosely strung together with a weak attempt to corrall them into themes and chapters. It seemed authentically him, which, after reading the book, you realize there are many different stages and sides to him that you get to peel back. It was an interesting one-time read, but I plan to pass it along for others to read.
I would love to see this in my school. So many students would see themselves in JVN’s story. His journey was heartbreaking yet to true that I’m sure many young men and women experienced in the 80s and 90s. My hope is that acceptance grows thanks to his bio and time on tv.
If I could, I would rate this book a 6! I just loved every second of hearing Jonathan tell his story. I highly recommend the audio version of this book. I laughed out loud so many times. I also cried at times. Whatever Jonathan does, he does with his whole heart, and this came through in every word of his story. After reading the book, I've started watching Queer Eye with my older son. We are loving the sense of joy and acceptance that the stars of the show share with viewers. Jonathan is perfect for it!
I did not see any of that coming. Our sweet baby JVN has lived a thousand different lives already. My heart hurts for all the pain and suffering he has gone through. He managed to make some of the darkest shit imaginable funny and readable. What an unexpectedly devastating but ultimately triumphant book.
A wonderful, insightful, hilarious and poignant memoir that gave me a lot of openings to discuss issues with my therapist. I especially recommend the audiobook because Jonathan reads it himself and there's nothing like hearing it in his own voice!
