I LOVE GAY BASEBALL!!! This was such a a great read, my only critique is that the ending felt a bit rushed. I wish we got more of their playoff run games and how the final game ended. But still thoroughly enjoyed this one!

This was a really sweet story, not only the two main characters' romance and individual journeys, but also Gene's friendship with Vince! Definitely a book I will recommend to friends.

⚾ Found family
⚾ Optimistic and hopeful
As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Note that this list of warnings and triggers may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.Brief instances of verbal and systemic transphobia and homophobia; references to the misogyny trans men continue to face after coming out; brief depictions of panic attacks.
The hype surrounding this beautiful book is the real deal, and I'm only disappointed I let it gather dust on my TBR for so many months. This book made me feel all the things. I laughed with the characters, I cried, I felt their disappointment and despair, I was frustrated, and I cheered for them. The author begins his note to us by saying "this book is an optimistic one" and I felt that to my core. I long for a world where players like Gene, his coach, Vince, and so many others can make it to The Show while being their true, authentic selves. The Prospects made me look inward and realize that your dreams, hopes, and aspirations can change into something you didn't realize and that's okay. Gene and Luis are both living proof of that. I absolutely adored the coming of age vibes in this book, and I think it was due to the author's unique storytelling and writing style. I also loved the baseball element in this book. It was so detailed and well-done that I could feel myself sitting in the stands watching their games progress. The romance between Luis and Gene was just so sweet and endearing. Innocent and fiery at the same time. I enjoyed watching their relationship progress given their unique history and the animosity between them when Luis joins his minor league team.
This is definitely one of those books I'd love to read again for the first time, but I can also totally see it becoming a comfort re-read. If you're a fan of queer romance and a lover of baseball, you absolutely do not want to miss The Prospects.
