Interesting book that holds your attention. Others reviewers have found it tragically sad but while there is melancholy I don’t find it overwhelming.

“And whether you believe in miracles or not, I can guarantee that you will experience one. It may not be the miracle you’ve prayed for. God probably won’t undo what’s been done. The miracle is this: that you will wake in the morning and be able to see again the startling beauty of the day”

This is now one of my favorite books I have read, a beautiful teenage story of loss, of grief, of misery and hopefulness in a beautifully written way that many books fail to match. I think I still prefer This Tender Land but this is a very close, although I think the two are slightly different books narrative wise (one is about family loss, one is about the lack of)

This is my first William Kent Krueger book, and I am very impressed. I enjoyed the story very much! Very moving! I look forward to reading more by this author.

I really adore his books. I've read and loved 3 so far. I figured out the mystery pretty early on, but it in no way took away from the rest of the book.

A beautifully written coming of age story as the main character, as an adult, recounts a summer of tragedy when he was 13 years old. The audiobook is outstanding and includes an interview with the author, who says(I’m paraphrasing) he always envisioned this book as a story to be read aloud.
