Almost everyone let this poor boy down except Leek. This was a hard read and I felt bad for Agnes in the beginning but grew to share Leek’s sentiment by the end and was just waiting for her to pass so Shuggie could really live. The ending seems hopeful but the entire novel is so dreich I don’t imagine Bain’s life becoming much better any time soon. I look forward to the show.

Extremely sad story of alcoholism and its devastating familial, social, and economic effects. A portrayal of parenting your parent and the love and strength it takes to never give up on those whose present and futures are wrought with addiction.

Honestly the most depressing thing I've ever read (maybe I Gevalia avoid that but good god). Realistic to the point of hopelessness. I know terrible people and situations exist but there was no relief here for Shuggie. I think he had a handful of people shown his life who weren't completely  awful? It was well written, but if I could tell past me to skip this one I would. The content warnings are quite serious. I would only rec this book if you  need to read about stuff that's so awful anything in your life will seem better in comparison...
