A cute story about Elizabeth, an elephant sea that lived in a river in New Zealand.

I liked this way more than I thought I would! I loved hearing about Elizabeth, an elephant seal who lived in a river that flowed through a city in New Zealand. Warm and sweet.

The only thing I wish that this book would have had was more on the REAL Elizabeth; how much of the story was embellished? When did she arrive, is she still there, when did she die? Is there a monument? When did this take place --that kind of thing.

This was a great book. It is an interesting story and it has both history and science in it. I loved how the facts about elephant seals were kind of snuck in to the story. I'd love to use it for school-age storytime. Kids will learn something when the read this, but it won't feel that way.

I had never heard of this delightful elephant seal, and I was fascinated by this charming story. Lynne Cox excellently depicts this real-life seal who traveled hundreds of miles to return home. Floca's illustrations are equally engaging, and children will be drawn to the beautiful details in this book. Readers will learn lessons of dogged determination and friendship. They will be spellbound by Elizabeth's story and will long to learn more about elephant seals and New Zealand after reading this book. It would make a great pairing with a marine unit because of its connections to wildlife. Elizabeth is excellently personified, and children will feel connected to her.

The true story of an elephant seal that persisted in returning to the Avon River in Christchurch and sunbathing in the road, no matter how many times she was towed out to sea. A nice return visit to New Zealand.
