After Kaspar's book, I didn't expect to like this one as much as I did, but I really enjoyed Straik and Ruth both individually and as a couple! What can I say, I'm a sucker for a brooding, space-emo princeling, and Ruth is a bitch and I like her so much.  The misunderstanding that opened their relationship was resolved fairly quickly, and removed the hatred and antagonism from their relationship, but Dixon maintained the mutual challenging and teasing that made Ruth and Straik's chemistry fun to come back to.

I enjoyed their relationships/friendships with the aani crewmen on the ship (Straik not knowing how to interact with anybody and mimicking the teasing ribbing he'd seen with the other corsairs to poor effect made me laugh out loud a few times) and I was a big fan of Ruth's big emotions when they met
Ruthie, her sister-clone, and found out Ruth was a clone as well

Best of all, I loved watching these two very different people learn to love each other the way the other needed to be loved. I'm a sucker for masaka men's absolute devotion to their partners (clearly, I've only read all of IPB and Icehome at a breakneck pace), and I'm an even bigger sucker for both people in a relationship to be equally ride or die for each other. Ruth matches Straik's crazy, and I love her for it. This was a really fun read.
