I enjoyed this. It had a lot of political commentary in an interesting "what if" scenario. If you struggle being in the POV of an unlikeable character though, this isn't the book for you. I am also hoping that more character growth takes place for her in the second book.

"You can only do so much pretending before you become the thing you're pretending to be."

I don’t know what else to say now other than what the hell. It’s safe to say that this is not at all the kind of book I was expecting to read from Hank Green. And I think going into this book with absolutely no expectations at all is the best way to experience it. I was completely taken aback by the plot and once I started getting into it, I found the book impossible to put down. A surprising read that easily earned a spot among my favorites this year.

Side note, not the best book to start reading late at night. It’s now 6am and I’m terrified of going to sleep because of the dream. Would not recommend doing this.

read in 3 days, longer overall

pros:
- sheer creativity of plot - the Dream, Carls, etc but still maintains a pretty realistic response if this situation actually happened irl - Defenders and Dreamers
- very interesting towards the last 1/3 portion
- captivating lines like “before i died” that make you want to keep reading
- easy to read, mostly interesting characters
- hank green writing as a 23 year old bisexual woman, he really said bi rights

I was really into this book, but wished for more conclusion at the ending.
