This is not The Gruffalo, but it is what thousands of picture books published each year attempt to be and fail. A truly charming, funny, and touching story about a cat. The rhyming text is so well crafted that you hit the rhythm, humor, and emotional arcs perfectly on the first read-through. The pictures are vibrant, appealing, and purrfectly (sorry) compliment the text, adding depth to the characters and setting without distracting from the story. What could be a rather disturbing scene of hat theft, busker injury, and cat stranding becomes emotionally manageable (and my daughter's favorite part of the book) without losing its plot impact because of the skillful balance of the rhyming text and cartoonish illustrations. Satisfying and substantial without being overlong, cute but not cloying, and withstands repeated readings beautifully. Loved it. Ages 4-6. Highly recommended.

Animals: Cats
Music: Singing, street performance

A full, satisfying story that takes place over a long period of time which is great for exposing children to stories that have plots that exist past the here and now.

I'm reading my way through [author: Julia Donaldson]'s body of work because I love her writing so much! This one isn't as great as [book: Room on the Broom] or [book: The Gruffalo], but they're pretty hard to beat. I enjoyed the different style of rhyme and Berry loved the kitties!

A present from the mother in law, my 17 month old is obsessed with this book. The squirmy little bugger who's constantly moving will come over carrying it with his refrain of 'TatTat' on repeat and will sit there silently while it's read, only for him to turn back to the front to start again. It's remarkable.

Thankfully it's a great little story, full of fun rhymes and with quite a touching story at the heart. There's a lot of the usual busy and visually inventive scenes making for a great anytime read.

Easily the longest book I've been able to read to my little girl so far. Her attention wandered towards the last pages, but I was still able to finish it, and that was quite impressive.

I liked this one because the text compels you to read at a frantic pace with quite a clever rhythm. You can easily slide into a John Cooper Clarke style (without the expletives), which is a lot of fun. What it has to tell us about relationships, I'm not really sure - you have a cat losing a long term friend and finding a family, then, after being reunited with his friend, deciding he prefers his wife, while his son, who was unadoptable takes his place. It suggests Tabby McTat was only interested in the music while he searched for a mate, and that his friend doesn't care what cat he has with him - as long as it's a tabby one with a loud voice. Hm. Poignant.

Does the little girl like it? I should say so. She seemed to enjoy the rhythm and pace of the text, and I caught her beaming up at me from time to time as I barrelled through. I've only read it to her the once so far because I suspect getting all the way through it might have been a fluke, and I don't want that to be the case. I suppose I'll just try it again and see.

There's also a prodigious amount of detail in the illustrations which should only deepen the appreciation of this book as she gets older, because I'll be able to go "can you see a dog? How many kittens are on this page? What colour is the man's scarf? Can you see a wheelchair?" and really help her development and language skills. I'm very much looking forward to that.
