Let me first say that I am a huge JCO fan. When I saw this book I was so excited to start reading it. However, my excitement vanished somewhere around the first chapter. I COULD NOT get through this book. I can't even put my finger on what it is I didn't like, but this has to be my least favorite JCO novel. Perhaps I'll try again at another point, but for right now, I did not like it at all.

  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Big JCO fan here, but woah. Read about half of this and just couldn't get through it. It was GORGEOUSLY written, and the atmosphere was working, the mystery was there, the language, the characters, everything was on point!... and yet, it didn't work. It just didn't go anywhere. The same emotion was stated a thousand times, the same beats, the same tone, so yeah... I kind of forgot I was reading this one, but I did try. Quite dull.

Could not finish. Not to say it was a bad book, but it was not holding my interst. The first several chapters were about her dad and a crime he was a suspect in. Was not moving along. Could be a wonderful book.

when i was in high school i read a lot of joyce carol oates. as one of my professors commented: "that's young for most of her stuff. i've come to think i was probably too young to appreciate a lot of it, and living in syracuse i'm especially interested in her books about upstate new york.

however, this book was not for me. the repetition and stream of conscious writing bored me. the first part is told in first person from the girl's point of view, and the second section told in third person point of view from the boy, and i think the story was much more suited to third person writing - and i found that section more enjoyable. slightly.

eh, just not a fan of this one. oates is so prolific, doesn't she have a book out every year? i think i need someone to recommend me the cream of the crop.
