Unfortunately did not love this YA fantasy. I didn’t connect with the characters at all, the motivation of

the main prisoner villain, Cresta, was weak and didn’t make sense. The poison plotline was disappointing (how did Kiva never consider poison when none of the guards were getting sick? And never noticed a secret cupboard in a room she’d been working in for 10 years???). Kiva was only able to survive the trials with the help others, which became boring.

Enjoyed the book enough to finish it but won’t be continuing the series.
