*THIS IS NOT A HORROR BOOK* Getting into this is was grabbed by the word zombie. After reading the synopsis I was ready to sink my teeth into some spooky shit. Nah this not that. This is a story of love and heartbreak. So if you looking for something scary, spooky, creepy…keep it moving. This ain’t that

I received this through NetGalley as an arc.

This book is definitely a YA Fantasy Thriller. At first you have no clue if the main character, Zharie is suffering for some mental break or is truly seeing zombies and in all honesty by the end you kind of still don’t. I like the realism of the drama of being dumped on a different family member after death of a parent and also the teen drama with relationships. With dealing with a piece of crap of a father and dealing with her mother sudden death you wouldn’t be surprised if Zhaire was going crazy. Overall I really had a fun time reading this book and trying to figure out what was real and what was in her mind definitely recommend I give 4.5 stars

I initially started reading this under the impression there would be actual, not just metaphorical zombies.

That said once I adjusted my expectations and approached it as a st ry about grief and loss and love I appreciated it considerably more.  The emotions are raw and the poetry is very evocative. I expect it would have resonated with me much more strongly had I read it when I was a teenage girl going through my own angst and losses.

Eh, so slow. Not really worthy of the TikTok hype. The zombie aspect was actually really lame. Wouldn't recommend.

Rated a 3 but more like 2.5. I wanted to like this book, I really did, but just couldn't get into it. I did slog thru it, only to be disappointed by a lackluster ending.

I like to say that Mike Flanagan writes stories about human emotions and relationships under the guise of horror. The same can be said about this book. It's not really a horror story in the way you might expect and the zombies aren't the monsters. This is a story about loss and grief and all the pain that comes with love.
Those last chapters dealing with Auntie E and Zharie and then Zharie and Devin? My God.
It's heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time, plus I loved the millennial pop culture references sprinkled in. (Shout out to those The Used lyrics!)

It is a slower paced and more introspective than you might think, reading the synopsis, so just as a heads-up if you're expecting something more like a thriller or even a suspense novel.
