The Illyrian Adventure by Lloyd Alexander

Genre: realistic fantasy
Summary: This is Vesper Holly's first adventure. She goes to the country of Illyria, which would be something similar to the Balkan states and settles the dispute between two feuding races by solving an age old mystery.
Response: Like I mentioned in another review of the Vesper Holly series, these are great, fast moving stories that offer a strong heroine. They share some similarities to Sherlock Holmes (mystery) and Indiana Jones (action) The arch-enemy Helvitius is truly awful and it is a joy to see Vesper triumph every time.

Vesper Holly, a headstrong, witty heroine, sets out with her guardian for Illyria, a tiny country in the middle of no one knows quite where, on a quest to prove her late father's theories about the country. Rebel forces, assassins, treasure, conspiracy, a quest, and villainous villiany.

2019 edit -

Not quite as good as I remember from my youth :(

A quick light read. But a strong female character. I initially was annoyed that the book wasn't narrated by her, but I enjoy getting to see things through Brinnie's eyes. Mostly you get to see how much more competent Vesper is than him.

Vesper is amazing, I just wish we could see from her point of view.

This a really quick and easy book to read! 'The Illyrian Adventure' had super fun characters and the story was entertaining.

It's always exciting when Alexander's main character is a girl... and Vesper is his best. Brinnie is his best fuddy-duddy and the villain! Well, he certainly is a gentleman!

Revisiting some old favorites from childhood is one of my personal favorite ways to break out of a reading slump. I adored this book as a 10-year-old, and 26-year-old me hasn't changed her mind. And I mean, what's not to love? Vesper Holly (possibly one of the greatest names in literary history, btw), is a teenage female Indiana Jones, minus the artifact theft. Brinnie is an amazingly hilarious narrator who messes literally everything up, but Vesper and I love him anyway. Fun, exciting MG adventure with a nice happy ending, full of laughs and sweet moments.

Also, modern writers could learn a thing or two from Mr. Alexander about writing teenage girls in adventure stories. Nary a love interest or "let the men take care of this" in sight.

It would have been more thrilling and fast-paced if I was a child, but it was a good story.
