Reread this. I thought I’d rediscover it as awful but I still found it funny. It has a Christopher Moore quality to it.

This book was pretty nice, at least in the beginning. Later on in the book it got quite confusing with the amount of characters. Bob, Mr. B, Luke, Lucy, Estelle, Eck, Mona. It was quite chaotic, and I sometimes didn't even know who was talking now.
I really liked Lucy, but had hoped for a bit more story about her. For a book that is about Bob and Lucy, Lucy had only a bit of the spotlight.
Also it was quite a simple/predictable book. By 1/4 I already knew what would happen and who would get together. The signs are everywhere and easy to see, and I found that a bit disappointing. The other 3/4 of the book I only read to see if I was wrong, sadly I wasn't. :(

I remember picking this up and thinking it sounded really interesting so I put it on my to-read list and that's where it stayed for a while. I saw that there was a talking book edition available through the library so I decided to get it.
I hate to give this 2 stars because I've heard great things about this but unfortunately it wasn't for me. I found myself becoming bored with the characters. Bob didn't really irritate me or make me feel anything about him at all. Lucy was also boring, the character I think I liked best was the Eck. It didn't really say anything but I felt like I connected with it the most. The story of God being a sex driven teenage boy is unique and had me intrigued for a time but I didn't really understand where it was going.
I really think that I didn't get the concept of what the author was trying to achieve. Please don't base my review on not reading this because you might enjoy it!

Ik had, tot een paar dagen geleden, nog nooit van dit boek gehoord. Maar ik zat wat te snuffelen op boekenkraam (dat moet je nooit doen, uiteraard) en kwam ineens een flaptekst tegen die me wel aansprak. Ik ben sowieso wel van de wat als verhalen en "wat als God een hormoongestuurde tiener was" is natuurlijk een perfect uitgangspunt voor een te vermakelijk verhaal.
En vermakelijk was het zeker. Vooral de eerste helft was ongelooflijk grappig neergezet, zonder ook maar ergens gebruik te maken van info-dumps. Dat wil wel zeggen dat de precieze mythologie (Wie zijn die mensen die bepalen welke entiteit God wordt van welke planeet?) een beetje vaag blijft, maar ik had er zelf niet zo'n moeite mee dat gewoon los te laten. Je had die achtergrond niet nodig voor het verhaal, want het was niet waar het om draaide.
Vanaf halverwege werd namelijk duidelijk dat er stiekem toch wel wat diepere lagen in het verhaal verstopt zaten. Het verhaal vertelt eigenlijk heel veel verhalen. Het verhaal van Lucy, die in een gebed vraagt om liefde, maar eigenlijk niet precies weet wat dat is. Het verhaal van Luke, die jaren geleden gekwetst is en niet meer weet hoe hij zich open moet stellen, het verhaal van Estelle, die altijd in de schaduw van haar vader heeft gestaan, terwijl ze zoveel meer in haar mars heeft, het verhaal van B. die aan de ene kant baalt van zijn partner in crime, maar aan de andere kant meer van de aarde houdt dan wie dan ook, het verhaal van Bernhard die als priester niet meer zeker weet of God wel de moeite van het geloven waard is en het verhaal van Bob, die overal een enorm groot drama van maakt en geen seconde doorheeft wat de consequenties zijn.
En van al die verhalen, is het verhaal van Bob nog wel de minst interessante, alhoewel het wel de meest grappige verhaallijn is. Omdat er zoveel verhaallijnen zijn, wordt niet elke verhaallijn tot in de details uitgewerkt. Sommige karakters moeten het doen met een paar hoofdstukken, andere krijgen er veel meer. Maar ik bezit genoeg eigen verbeeldingsvermogen om de gaten zelf een beetje in te vullen.

Not a masterpiece, but it was a fun read. The concept is so funny to hear (teenage boy as god), but I'm not sure the execution was as clever as the idea. I liked Lucy's character, but I never found anything redeeming about Bob. My favorite part was the end when there seemed exciting possbility of a relationship for Lucy.
You can definitely skip this one... but if you want a quick read that doesn't get too deep, you can give it a shot.

So all those hurricanes, earthquakes and floods - nothing to do with climate change. It turns out that God is a teenage boy and when he's thwarted in love (well, sex really), all, uh, hell breaks loose. This is hilarious, completely imaginative and a little more than borderline blasphemous. And nothing like Meg Rosoff's other books.

Brilliantly done. Really enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. However, all the reviews mentioning the uniqueness of the premise...you should know this isn't a unique premise. I saw a short play about 10 years ago where the whole idea is that God is a teenager/college student who creates Earth as a science fair project. So it's not unique, but it's still really well done.
My only beef is Skype. Really? Really now? She was painful to read. You just can't translate Valley Girl speech to writing. It's confusing and hurts the brain more than hearing a Valley Girl would.
After I finished reading, I had to sit for a few minutes and just let it sink in. Like that play I saw so many years ago, I think this'll stick with me.

Some good little snippets and over all a good read and good idea. A little bit too clumsy and male oriented though, also some unresolved questions. I didn't feel I really connected to the characters.
