Enjoyed going back to these characters. I loved the first book and it's great getting a little more backstory on John.

There is something about John's narrative voice that is soothing and enticing, all at the same time. Once the end was reached I wanted more; I could have very happily gone through The Witch Hunter storyline through his eyes.

If you have not begun the series, this novella is a good way to start due to character introduction, glimpses into the magic of the world and how it figures into the sense of time and place, and the stirrings of the plot.

Obviously this is going to be a quite short review, since the novella was only 32 pages long. Up until a few days ago I didn't even know this little insight into John's life existed but someone on Twitter told me about it and OF COURSE I had to get it immediately!

It's no secret that I absolutely adored The Witch Hunter and that I can't wait for book 2 to be released. The ones who read my review will also know that John is extremely gorgeous and that I love him loads - he's such a charming and loving guy!

This novella is about him and his past, what he's been through and everything that happened before Elizabeth met all the others. I found all this super interesting, even though also heartbreaking. I didn't know John had such a hard past and lost people he loved - maybe I overread it in the actual book? Was it revealed there? I don't remember! I felt bad for him and just wanted to hold him really, really tight ... all the thoughts he had, well it was sad. Poor John.

What's my conclusion? Definitely a must-read for everyone who loved the first book and couldn't get enough of our precious John! Even though it's very short and I wish there would've been some more pages, it was great to read out of his perspective.

I love John even more now! You don't read about many male healers in book. John is such a sweet loyal character. He's definitely one of my favorite characters. :)

I’m a fan of The Witch Hunter, so I was really excited when I stumbled across The Healer this week. I absolutely love prequels and short stories that are part of a series. They almost always enhance my reading experience and if you don’t read the short stories/novellas that are associated with your favorite series, you’re missing out.

The Healer is written from John’s point of view and starts just before Elizabeth’s story in The Witch Hunter. I enjoyed his perspective on what the heck was going on with Nicholas. I can’t forget to mention his reactions to Elizabeth. Frankly, The Healer made me love John and I already liked him before reading it.

Since I liked John in The Witch Hunter, I was not opposed to a short story focusing on him. He didn’t get fleshed out the same way Elizabeth did, but that’s to be expected with the first book in a series. The Healer definitely gives you more history on John and I loved every second of it.

I really enjoyed reading The Healer. It was a short, quick read and my only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer (but that’s not exactly a book criticism). If you’ve already read The Witch Hunter, I would recommend The Healer. If you haven’t picked The Witch Hunter up yet, I would still recommend The Healer (it can be read as a prequel) unless you loathe books with witchcraft.

John!! He is just so cute..
It's nice to read the beginning of the story from John's point of view. To see how Elizabeth change his life, help him to move through his mom and sister's death.
I can't wait for the next book!!

Short but perfect.

John is dealing with the grief and PTSD of watching his sister and mother burn at the stake after being caught being healers. He then saves a girl who had the same fate.

John's POV of the beginning of The With Hunter and how all his smiles actually mean something. How he is very skilled at being a Healer. And just a little insight on the workings of this reformist family.
