Def not as strong at the first book in the series, by plot or character development. But I enjoyed coming back to this world and I hope the next one is better

A witchy mystery rom-com is just what the doctor ordered and Lana Harper delivered with From Bad to Cursed! I absolutely loved Paybacks a Witch and the town of Thistle Grove, so it was truly a treat getting to go back and watch more characters fall in love. This book was so fun and I can’t wait for the next installment- Back in a Spell, which releases in January 10, 2023!

I thought the first books love story was pretty dull but what I seen from the two characters of THIS book made me excited. A little enemies to lovers if you will. There was a back story I was very curious about.

I should have stayed curious. I didn’t like this story at all.

First of all, Isa was a little annoying. I don’t even know why. I can’t really recall much about her personality other than she was nice to most people scared of her mom and mean to Rowan. So maybe annoying isn’t even the right word but she is lacking in some way.

But Rowan I do not like. We are given some weird ass back story that he had it out for her when she was a volunteer at a shelter he worked at, writing her up all the time. Then she pulls one revenge prank and he flips his lid and fires her. The prank? Enchanting fake SQUIRRELS to go after him. Bc apparently he is scared of them. A fireable offense though??

But I knew that must not be the whole story so I waited and waited for Rowan’s side of things as enemies always seem to become enemies over some misunderstanding. Not this time, which I guess was a bit unpredictable (compared to an extremely predictable plot it was SHOCKING). No misunderstanding!!! When they finally have that talk, which happens AFTER they have made out but then he all together rejected her and admitted it is because of her family, and he’s like yup true I hated you bc I think your family is evil. BUT ACTUALLY YOU REALLY DID DO A BAD JOB AT THE SHELTER!! But also I hated you from the start and decided to pick on an 18 year old girl who HAS NO POWER OVER THE FAMILY SHE WAS BORN INTO instead of being an adult and actually having a conversation to help correct her behavior. Oh and I couldn’t stand the thought of kissing you because of who your family is too. Everything is her fault in this book and I do not like it.

I also don’t remember this utter hatred of the alber-whatever family in the first book???? It just seems entirely over the top that he would be so hateful towards them despite having no issues with Talia in the last book. Which I guess happened after the shelter stuff but that just means he had so so so much time to learn that he is actually just a judgmental bitch and he should make it right and apologize. You know he didn’t. Until he wanted to kiss her again 🙄

And what made him finally decide to reflect and apologize (a bit weakly in my opinion)? Bc the night before she had a panic attack. Is THAT when he realized that she is actually a person in her own right despite who her family is?? (Not that her family IS actually bad at all) she showed a thread of weakness and NOW you decide she’s worthy of you? Bc you couldn’t handle a strong bad ass independent witchy girl until he seen her weakness. Now u can feel good about being the manly protector, now you have something over her and the playing field is equal?????? Ok then.

(oh but actually after all the smooching I will up and ghost you after you had a traumatic experience and your sister almost died bc u made fun of my family 😤 )

I get the showing of vulnerability is supposed to be the pivotal moment but there were SO MANY other moments that she proved him wrong about his prejudices and he still decides she’s a monster up until he sees her cry. I don’t like that.

Idk I didn’t love the first book and I really disliked this one. The writing is fine, the stories not entirely unique but entertaining enough. I think it’s the characters for me. They all suck.
