Midnight Thief

Midnight Thief was a pretty interesting book. In it, you will meet Kyra. She's your typical assassin who doesn't look like an assassin. When she's offered a job by the Assassin Guild, she definitely hesitates to take it. Rightfully so in my opinion. She's not used to this world or the rules, but it is an intriguing offer.

For most of this book, I was pretty invested with what was happening. Then I hit some boring parts where nothing was really happening. Also, the romance was kind of annoying me too. Yes, we get some crushes, kisses, and flirtations but sometimes I want more. At least a little bit more when it came to this book. Maybe things will develop that way in the next book?

Other than that, I liked the action and the world building. Still hoping for something more in the sequel since that's the last book of this duology. Definitely plan to dive into Daughter of Dusk soon. Maybe even the novella beforehand.

Kyra has grown up on Forge’s streets and with her ability to scale walls and avoid the attention of guards, she is able to take what she needs to survive. When James, the leader of the Assassin’s Guild, offers her a job to help them steal from The Palace, she agrees but struggles against the guilds rules and James, who is darkly alluring. Tristam is a young knight who is on a mission to stop Demon Riders after they murdered his best friend. Fate causes Kyra and Tristam to work together but when a secret from Kyra’s past is revealed, it reshapes both of their lives forever.

Midnight Thief is a really good classic fantasy book with a story full of action and unlike most YA is not focused on romance. I could not put this book down and I liked that the good and bad guys were not clear cut.

When I started reading this I thought I would be bored with Kyra as she is very similar to a lot of fantasy heroines, as she is an orphan who has learned to live on the streets, but I really liked her as she is intelligent, protective and while not all of her decisions were the best, she made them as well as she could, based on the situation. Tristam is brave, clever, and moral, and is willing to help people know matter who they are. There are lots of secondary characters, such as James, Flick, Bella and Malikel, and they are all really well written as I feel like I understand them.

This book does not come across as a debut novel and I am looking forward to the next book. I would recommend Midnight Thief to people who enjoy really good fantasy books and those who enjoyed the prequel novella, Poison Dance.

Good first book. I thought the plot developed well and I loved the conflict the heroine found herself in as well as how she reacted to it.

I'll be looking for the next installment.

Kyra is a beast. Love books that exhibits such powerfully wild heroes, cant wait for the sequel to come out.

I really enjoyed this book until it got to the main reveal which just kinda ruined it for me. I will probably continue to read the series but I was a little let down by it.

excellent!

Midnight Thief is a quality YA fantasy with a likable but flawed main character and interesting lore. While it might not stand miles apart from the YA crowd, it was still a very enjoyable book and I would recommend it to all fans of YA fantasy.

Like I mentioned, Kyra was a likable main character, even though she had questionable morals, being a thief and all. She was the type of thief who didn't steal from the poor who were already having trouble making ends meet, but instead targeted "wallhuggers" (people who lived near the castle and had enough to spare). She also would give a portion of her take to the street kids, since she grew up on the streets herself.

The other characters were pretty good as well. Tristam is a young knight who has to learn that sometimes your duty and honour will be at odds with each other and there will be negative consequences either way. There's Bella, the kind-hearted cook who is like a mother to Kyra. There's Flick, Kyra's friend who protects her like a little sister and who I wish we had gotten to know better. Also, later on we meet Pashla, who I came to like and wanted more of her story. Then there's James, leader of the Assassin's Guild and all-around badass. He creeped me out from the start. He was so cold and manipulative and just gave me the creeps.

There's some interesting lore surrounding the tribe of barbarians that have been attacking farms surrounding the city of Forge. They have large wildcats that can easily take down livestock or humans. I don't want to give anything away, but these barbarians become a pretty major part of the story.

The plot is interesting, but not terribly unique. Kyra pushes her limits, then realizes just where her path is leading. There's some serious Assassin's Guild business that's not entirely based on just assassinating people. There's barbarians with giant cats that attack.

Overall, I though Midnight Thief was a good addition to YA fantasy. I'm looking forward to more from Livia Blackburne!

A really enjoyable read and story. And no, I'm not biased because of the heroine's name. ☺️

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It wasn't bad, but nothing particular stood out to me either.
