Delightful! I was so hoping to like this; I had only read "The Grand Sophy" and wasn't bowled over by it, so I was unsure if I'd take to this one. Frederica, the character, is a bit overwhelming at the start but she quickly grew on me, as did the whole story. Would've adored an Epilogue or, at least, more of F and V as a couple (at last!) but, sigh, not to be.
These are great if I'm in the mood for them. I made the mistake of reading two in a row and started to burn out. There are a lot of them . . .
Another great read by Georgette Heyer! With this one, I particularly liked how the story included Frederica's younger brothers, who were 12 and 16. They were hilarious, and I loved them both.
A thoroughly enjoyable book, though rather different from [b: The Grand Sophy|261689|The Grand Sophy|Georgette Heyer|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1414731822s/261689.jpg|3234291] with its slower start and more composed heroine. Two things especially impress me about this romance: the exploration of the hero's feelings and how the affection arises from mutual respect as opposed to an initial antagonism.
Now that I've read two Heyer romances (in less than a week!), I can see some patterns: the role of sick children in advancing a love story, and the necessity of a farce at the end. A complete delight! I enjoyed this so much and laughed a lot at the humor and wit of the story. The hero, Lord Alverstoke - a jaded, selfish, constantly bored rake with a sharp, dry wit - is a wonderfully charismatic character, and the transformation he makes from the start to the end of the story is so much fun. Seeing him get more and more involved in the lives of his distant relation, Frederica Merriville, and her siblings is hilarious and, ultimately, really heartwarming. (I love little Felix! What a hoot that kid is.) The bantering conversations between Frederica and Alverstoke sparkle and their friendship turning gradually to love was genuinely romantic to me.
Memorable scenes (, a memorable cast of characters, and a hero and heroine with great chemistry - I loved all of it. This one is going right on my "favorites" list - 5 stars.

I liked the book, but the slang used by the characters is difficult to understand. It wasn't as bad as Cotillion, but I frequently felt that I didn't understand what people were saying.
