I learned a ton reading this book. It is a great biography! The author’s writing felt a little unseasoned? Other than that, a great read.

I really enjoyed this concise overview of Harriet Tubman's life on audio from my Scribd subscription. Harriet Tubman is a household name, but how many of us know the timeline of her heroic efforts or just how much she was snubbed in compensation from the government? Harriet had some tough choices to make over the years, and she worked with what she was given. I was interested to learn that she adopted later in life and shocked at how long she lived given the physical exertion she went through in her youth. I would recommend this to anyone looking to increase their knowledge of an American hero.

read this on a plane & it kept me from falling asleep. i liked getting a more in-depth look at Tubman's life, especially her time as a Civil War spy. what an incredibly fierce and compassionate human being.

I started reading this book minutes after I finished watching the film Harriet. This book is a good introduction to Tubman and I was happy to read about aspects of her life that the film did not cover.

This book is better written than the authors previous book on Oney Judge however I still take issue with a historian assigning feelings to people that we don't know they had.

I loved Erica Armstrong Dubar's biography of Ona Judge, and her prowess continues in this biography of Harriet Tubman. She does a really good job (in both cases) constructing a narrative for individuals with big holes in their paper trail because of their status as formerly enslaved laborers. Giving concrete facts where she can and using historical context clues to give more insight into the lives of these brave women creates very readable stories.

In the case of Tubman, there are thankfully more sources to work from, as well as quotes from the woman herself. This is a relatively quick read that packs a punch, and I highly recommend it!

I am not a huge fan of the design of this book. I can tell it was kinda trying to use the same formatting ideas implemented in books like The Notorious R.B.G. in terms of size and language. But I feel like the publisher should have added more graphics, artwork, or photos from the time (even if they weren't of Harriet but of places she might have worked/lived) to really make the format sing. None of that really detracted from the reading experience, however.
