Olga Tokarczuk is an amazing writer, and her translators are amazing at what they do. She's one of my favorite writers, and she is completely worthy of her Nobel Prize in Literature. The Lost Soul has all of that amazing writing, and more (drawings!). We learn that our souls sometimes can't catch up to us, and how problematic that can be. We also get information that your soul will come back to you if you keep in one place.
SpoilerI do think the child that shows up in the end of the story is his soul, and that this short story is mostly about how we lose ourselves much sooner than we think we do. I believe that this book can relate to childhood, and how we sometimes have to grow up faster, leaving behind that fun, carefree soul.
Overall, I wish I didn't leave this in my TBR pile for so long.

Beautiful illustrations, calm and carefully detailed. I loved the idea of a soul trailing slowly behind each person, the conception is similar to my own and felt familiar.

Just one page of text, but thought-provoking.

“If someone could look down on us from above, they’d see that the world is full of people running about in a hurry, swearing and very tired, and their lost souls, always left behind, unable to keep up with their owners. The result is great confusion as the souls lose their heads and the people cease to have hearts.”
