This was a very good read. It’s not one that grabs you and takes your breath away. It’s more of a slow paced, a lot of bigger picture things to think about, will ponder it afterwards read.  It also really shines a light on Japanese imperialism and I felt I learned a lot even though the point of the book was not to teach.
I didn’t love the emotional distance the writing gave. I like to be emotionally entwined with the characters and something about the writing kept me from being all in.

I really enjoyed this book! An epic, long ranging page turner. It felt satisfying to read such a long book so quickly. I lost focus at the end but other than that, truly enjoyed. Characters, especially the women, felt well developed.

I learned so much reading this book and the first third had me so invested, but the longer the book went on, the slower it was and the less I was caring about the characters (there's a lot of them).

Beautifully written. I loved every single one of these characters regardless of anything. She paid such great attention to everyone and their growth. I felt sad it ended.
