I enjoyed this book like I’ve enjoyed the rest of the series. It’s fun and adventurous and if you’re a Disney fan, you’ve got to read them!

At first I felt like this was slow and some parts a little eye roll-y (and there was a missed opportunity to refer to Phil as a nanny goat! Lol!) But honestly this ended up being such a great book! It even had me in tears, and that's not like me at all!

If you loved the movie Hercules, and you love all things Greek history/religion give this book a try! ❤️

It was a little slow space in the beginning and I expected more of Hades in it but it was pretty cute. I would not necessarily consider this a twisted tale but more like what happens after Disney's Hercules becomes a God, since they don't really change that part of the story line this is more of okay well Hercules became a God and in the cartoon/movie he is now part of Olympus but he chose to stay with Meg. Well in this book it picks up where Hercules becomes a God and the twist is Zeus does not allow him to stay with Meg and Hera offers Meg a way she can stay with Hercules but she must go on a quest to prove that she is worthy of becoming a God herself... so not really a twist but let's continue the story with focusing on Meg now. Probably why I gave it 4 starts. But I did think it was cute and I love how the story tells more about Meg's background and more detail about how she came to work for Hades. But my overall all favorite part is the mention of one of my favorite Goddess leaving me with a taste for please write about her!! That is all I will say without giving up any spoilers.

Type of read: Commuter Read.

What made me pick it up: Disney + alternate ending = TBR. I've been wanting to start the Twisted Tales series and 'Go the Distance' was the first available at my library.

Overall rating: Arrrrrggggghhhhh......I wanted to like this book but it just felt...forced. I felt like Calonita was trying to put in too many of the little quips and personality traits that make Meg who she is and it came off feeling forced, unnatural, and cheap. I'm usually not one to shy away from YA but this was the very Y side of YA. I'm still planning to read some others in the Twisted Tales series, especially since there are multiple authors that contribute, but I wasn't a huge fan of the way Calonita approached 'Go the Distance.' Loved the concept, loved that Meg got to be the star of the show, hated how it was done and how juvenile and whiny it came off.

I liked this better than the Mulan retelling in the Twisted Tales series, Reflection, and I think it's probably due to the better character development written here.

I know that the Disney Twisted Tales series is not for everyone. I also know that since there are different authors and different ways to rewrite these stories not every story works for everyone either. However, I really love this series. They add some depth and context to the stories we know so well and love so much, while they never lose the true Disney charm. For me it are easy and entertaining books and as soon as I get a new one I make sure to read it.

What I love about this book, one of my most anticipated ones in the entire series, is that we really learn a lot about Meg. Of course, we see some parts of her story in the movie, but most of her background is unknown or nothing more than a throw away line. This book answers some really burning questions about Meg's childhood, how her heart got broken so badly and it shows that she might be more insecure than she lets on.

This book starts right after the final scene in the movie. If you haven't seen it or if it's been a while it might be worth rewatching Hercules before starting the book, because although it mentions past events it doesn't explain what happened in the movie. Luckily all familiar faces show up and all in surprisingly fun ways. I love how this story added some depth to the Gods, even Hades, and how especially the women got loads of time in the spotlight.

And even though we get to know Hera and Persephone and Athena and Aphrodite, and even though Meg has to learn everything about a girl who became collateral damage in the war of the Gods to save her, it's so very much Meg's heroes journey. A journey as there are so many in Greek mythology. A journey with challenges, impossibilities, moments of near failure and loads of danger. But most of all it's a journey with a very important, beautiful and true lesson.

And Athena gets to accompany a woman on her epic quest. It was about time.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved the writing style of this author, it made the story easy to get lost in. I finished this book in a day because I couldn't put it down. I definitely needed to hear the story of Meg and her journey, and this author wrote it beautifully.
