Very ahead of its time. Some really scary moments. Only let down by the flabbiness of the middle section
Moderate: Animal death and Kidnapping
Minor: Death

that genre label wasn’t kidding, this book is indeed weird!
it is amazing that this was published in 1908, it’s a very interesting story. i feel like the manuscript/journal log format could have been heightened by adding dates, could add to the acceleration of events
you can see the genre formations. the prose is incredibly vivid and effective. the narrative is broken into like 4 distinct periods, background, monster attack on the house, voyage into the unknown and unsuccessful attempt to return to normal. the events of these periods feels unconnected by just how vastly different the threats within are. all interesting in their own ways
overall pretty good

I feel like this book was very ahead of its time. An amazing introduction to the world of cosmic horror. I read this around the same time I read Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ & I had way more fun with this book.
