Listened by recommendation to prepare for my first GJJW weekend. Looking more forward to it, if that were even possible!
Listened a second time post-GJWW. Enamored.

I feel like I’m always extra generous when rating memoirs because they’re so personal, but this one genuinely deserves all the stars. I knew I would connect with this book from how I’ve connected with Brandi and her music already, but I wasn’t expecting such a powerful and loving tribute to rural Washington and the value of music and community. Brandi’s ability to accept and love all the messiness of herself and the world we live in is truly admirable. Listening to the audiobook came with the added bonus of Brandi singing acoustic after each chapter, which is a real treat.

You will not find a more wholesome, enduring, and driven individual. Completely enamored by her story and her rise to fame. The music at the end of every chapter was an awesome touch to this audiobook and tied her life story to each song. Brilliant!

Ack, this is SO GOOD. After hearing that Brandi sings between chapters, I decided to listen to the audiobook. I am so glad that I did! Her story is incredible, her writing is incredible, this book is just incredible. Gushing.

I found this pretty slow going, with some unnecessarily detailed descriptions of scenes which didn’t seem to carry much importance. Then on the other hand, the deeper stuff was often dealt with on a surface level. A few times, when talking about deep and complex emotions, Brandi said something along the lines of “I’m not meant to understand this, and I don’t think I should try.” This felt like such a frustrating take in a memoir! Memoirs are all about trying to understand, aren’t they?
I love Brandi Carlile, and there were parts of her life I loved learning about, but overall I was disappointed and had to really push through to finish.
