Imagine “Stand by Me”, “The Goonies”, “Stranger Things”, and “IT” all smushed together with a 60’s vibe. I loved this book. It had all the feels and a satisfying ending.

What a sweet, charming book--a long picaresque, coming-of-age meditation on what is a kind of romanticized (but not sentimental) view of the classic early '60s childhood. Seriously, a real page turner, and I don't find that to be the case with so many books I've read, not in the literal sense people should mean it. Though the resolution is slightly telegraphed or expected, it took none of the joy from the overall story for me. I love the magic and subtle horrors that underlie the mostly typical childhood of the narrator. McCammon weaves these elements in pretty deftly without forcing them or overwhelming the reader. The prose is mighty fine, too.
