What's with the sprouting of wings? Baffled me a bit!
I got about 60 pages in. I don’t find myself in the mood for this book at this time. It’s very nostalgic, which is normally not a dealbreaker but it feels very slow-paced with the descriptive narrative style and perhaps a little saccharine. It’s not that the author shies away from tough subjects. In these few short pages, there was a brilliant chapter about Cory’s sleepover at a friend’s, where we later discover the father is a nasty drunk. I’m sure there are plenty quality, impressive chapters but it’ll have to wait until I’m in a more relaxed mood to enjoy the full experience. I feel pressed for time at the moment.

Coming of age story with a murder in a small town and a few magical/monsters in the mix. Nicely written.

Just about the sappiest book ever, and some of Cory's exploits strained my credibility to the groaning point. But the plotting is magnificent, and McCammon perfectly captures the dreamy quality of a kid's life. I imagine I will be re-reading this one whenever I need a bit of sweetness and adventure.
